Ekpo Nka Owo, The Deity That Expose And Punish Infidelity Among Married Women In Akwa Ibom state
Ekpo Nka Owo, the Ibibio and Annang ancestral spirits or ghosts of adultery. Ekpo Nka Owo regulate, check, expose, and punish infidelity among authentically married women, in order to maintain the sanctity of marriage among the Ibibio.
According to Ibibio and Annang mythology, in Akwa Ibom state and some parts of Cross River, if a married woman commit adultery and refuses to admit her infidelity for possible cleansing, she dies during childbirth or lose her children.
It been believe that their souls will be claimed by the deity.
In the other hand, if a man is aware of his wife’s adulterous ways and fails to expose her, Ekpo Nka Owo will in return claim his soul. So many lives have been lost as a result of this.
An elderly man was once asked why the deity is only after women and ignored men who commit adultery, and his answer stunned the interviewer.
He said that a man’s infidelity is a crime against his wife, but a woman’s infidelity is a stain on the land.
Further research revealed that some parts of Igbo land also have similar customs. It is important that women learn about the tradition of their suitor (s) before going into marriage to avoid issues like this.
Ekpo Nka Owo they said, does not understand English. If you’re tired of your marriage, it is better you quit rather than to engage in extra marital affairs.
No pastor or priest can pray you out of the clutches of this deity, only confession and cleansing.
